Sharks and Pilot Fish in the Real World
In the ocean, sharks, pilot fish, and small free‑swimming fish interact in predictable ways.
Sharks move through the water hunting and feeding. Their size and speed create a zone of protection around them.
Pilot fish stay close because it gives them access to food scraps and safety from other predators.
The relationship isn’t one‑sided. Sharks tolerate pilot fish because the pilot fish clean them. They eat parasites, pick at dead tissue, and remove debris from the shark’s skin. A cleaner shark swims more efficiently, so the shark allows them to stay.
Then there are the fish that don’t keep the right distance or offer any benefit. These are the ones that wander too close or get caught in the shark’s path. These become shark food in the literal, biological sense.
It’s a simple system:
Sharks do what sharks do.
Pilot fish survive by staying in the right position and gaining value.
Shark food are the fish that drift into danger without awareness.
No emotion. No loyalty. Just marine life doing what marine life does.
The Metaphor
Every part of life has its own version of sharks, pilot fish, and shark food. Some actors have the power and incentives that shape what happens. Some people learn how to move around those forces instead of getting blindsided. And some people get caught without understanding what’s happening.
You don’t have to be a shark to survive. You just have to stop drifting.
Sharkproof Living uses the marine relationship as a metaphor because it’s straightforward:
- Sharks are actors with power and the ability to shape outcomes.
- Pilot Fish are people who understand the environment and position themselves intelligently.
- Shark Food are people who move without awareness and get caught by forces they didn’t see coming.
These are not moral categories. They describe how people operate inside any system.
The goal isn’t to turn people into sharks. The goal is to help people stop being shark food.
Sharkproof Living™
Sharkproof Living helps people understand the environment they’re operating in, see the forces that shape outcomes, recognize the actors involved, and make decisions with fewer surprises. It does this by helping people work through complexity and break it into manageable parts. The movement gives people practical ways to build personal systems they can trust. It is built on tools people can actually use to help them confidently make decisions, reduce avoidable mistakes, stay consistent, and remain in control.
